When the Sacramento Kings traded a package of role players (Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes, John Salmons and Greivis Vasquez) to the Toronto Raptors for Rudy Gay, the Kings were banking on the idea that they could lock up their new player with a contract extension.

The two sides were talking about a deal but, according to CowbellKingdom.com, talks haven’t progressed since Gay came back from winning a gold medal with Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.

"The 28-year-old small forward says he and the Sacramento Kings engaged in extension talks before he left for Spain to compete in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Contract negotiations have been on hold since.“Haven’t picked it back up,” Gay said of talks following the Sacramento Kings’ morning practice on Monday. “I really don’t need that over my head right now trying to make this team better and trying to also be better myself. And I didn’t need it over there (in Spain) so I think that’s something that will handle itself.”"

The report goes on to say that their is no timeline as to when talks will be picked up, but Gay is focusing on playing the season and will let management take care of it.

The Gay trade ended up working out for the Kings. Gay scored 21.1 points per game for the Kings, tied for his career-high, on 48.2 percent shooting (by far his career best). He added an average of 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 55 games for Sacramento.

It looks like the Kings and Gay are a good fit, and a contract extension would clearly be in the best interest of both parties involved.
