Derrick Favors could take the next step with the Jazz this season

The Utah Jazz are clearly banking on their young core, retraining big man Derrick Favors and swingman Gordon Hayward on huge deals in each of the last two seasons.

Derrick Favors may be the most talented play in that group and the Jazz are obviously counting on his continued development.

According to Joel Brigham of Basketball Insiders, Derrick Favors could take the next step this season.

"Favors has been a breakout candidate for a couple of seasons now, but the former No. 3 overall pick should finally find himself among the Western Conference’s most talented power forwards this season. He was drafted four years ago but he’s still only 23 years old, and under new head coach Quin Snyder, Favors should get the opportunity to work more outside of the paint, especially in pick-and-rolls with Dante Exum and Trey Burke. He broke 30 minutes a game for the first time last season, averaging 13 points and nine boards a game, but he was inconsistent and disappointing too often. Is this the year he finally grows up and helps anchor a young Utah team in need of leadership? Now feels like as good of a time as any."

If Derrick Favors can continue to progress (and he should at just 23 years old), the Jazz’s future could be very bright.

Derrick Favors averaged 13.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 52.2% from the field and 66.9% from the free throw line last season. In his four-year career, the third-overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft, has put up 9.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 0.8 assists per game while shooting 50.6% from the floor and 65.6% from the foul line.
