The title should have warned us, really. “The Secret to Talking Sports with any woman”. Oh, really? As a woman who kind of likes to talk sports, I was intrigued. Maybe it was going to explain how not to degrade women, or how to remember that they’re as invested in their team as you are. After all, the women in sports movement has begun- CBS Sports recently launched an entirely-female hosted sports commentary show, even.
The ‘article’ in question, though, quickly shut down that thought process. In the whole paragraph it took to explain this ‘secret’, it basically offended every female sports fan- and female sports analyst- alive.
"Not all women share your passion for sports, in case you hadn’t noticed. The reason? They need story lines.“Most women don’t care about stats,” says Andrei Markovits, Ph.D., coauthor of Sportista: Female Fandom in the United States. So while you’re enthusing about Dominic Moore’s scoring record, she’d rather hear about how he supported his wife’s battle with cancer—and even took a season off from the NHL at the height of his career. Treat your heroes as people and not just players on a field, and you’ll suck her in.Just don’t expect her to wear the foam finger."
Oh, Mens Health. What exactly are you trying to get at with this?
The reaction on Twitter is already pretty explosive, as is the comment section. Seems women aren’t fans of being told they don’t like stats- imagine that.
"Treat your heroes as people and not just players on a field, and you'll suck her in." Amazing. Treat people like people and women like that
