The Big Ten has been dominant in college basketball — here are the most dominant teams since 2000

It’s crazy how much can change in a few years. Remember back, if you can, to the turn of the century when the Big Ten was still considered an elite football conference and only a good basketball conference. Fast-forward 15 years into the future and the conference is known as a relative joke in football, but perhaps the best basketball conference around.

A few teams in this conference have seen great success in the new millennium, but some have really stood above the rest. This ranking system has separated the teams that find success on occasion and the teams that routinely carry this conference into the NCAA Tournament. Appropriately, this ranking system more handsomely rewards teams that are consistently successful.

Point Breakdown:

Conference Championship: 8 points
Conference Tournament Championship: 6 points
NCAA Tournament Appearance: 2 points
Sweet 16 Appearance: 3 points
Elite 8 Appearance: 4 points
Final Four Appearance: 5 points
Championships Game Appearance: 6 points
National Championship: 10 points

We reached back to the 1999-2000 season because that gives a broad example of success in the modern Big Ten era and it’s a clean number (exactly 15 seasons). Conference and conference tournament championships were heavily weighted because that measures direct competition between these schools. The accomplishments of each of the Big Ten’s current 14 teams were ran through this point breakdown and their subsequent ranking relies on the numbers, not opinion. Is your favorite Big Ten team one of the ‘big boys’ in the conference or a laughing stock?
