Geno Smith was the future at quarterback for the New York Jets, but that’s all starting to come into question.

The New York Jets are facing the Denver Broncos at home on Sunday afternoon, and it will be a career changing game for second-year quarterback Geno Smith. He was benched in favor of veteran Michael Vick against the San Diego Chargers this past Sunday, but the Jets will give him the start once again against Denver. This is the biggest game that Smith has ever played in his career, and the outcome and performance that he has could change the future that he has in New York.

Those are some extremely strong words about the upcoming game for Smith, but they make a lot of sense. Smith has shown talent in the past, but he has been unable to play consistently well so far. Obviously it is difficult for young quarterbacks to start in the NFL, but that doesn’t mean that they should be given a free pass either.

Smith has played poorly through the first five games of the season, throwing for 949 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has shown some flashes of brilliance, especially against the Green Bay Packers earlier in the season, but those have been few and far between throughout his career. The Jets still have hope that he can turn things around and become the franchise quarterback that they want him to be, but he has a lot of work to do in order to reach that goal.

Needless to say, the New York Jets don’t have a lot of time to waste finding their quarterback. Vick isn’t the long-term answer, but he would likely provide the Jets with a better chance to win this season if they put him on the field. Rex Ryan’s tenure with the Jets could very well be coming to an end, and he will begin going into desperation mode if his young quarterback can’t figure things out.

All of that being said, it will be a very intriguing game to watch on Sunday with more meaning for Smith. He has to figure out how to let loose and make plays with his arm, and he needs to be more aggressive on the ground as well. Denver is one of the best teams in the NFL, and finding a way to at least compete in the game would be a huge sign of improvement for Smith.
