The NHL regular season begins Wednesday with a four-game slate that features three division rivalry games between old foes and a conference rivalry set for prime time. Hockey season is back, folks, so settle in for another long one and prepare for a night of big shots, bigger hits and Doc Emrick losing his mind over nothing.

You can find the full NHL regular season schedule here at the league’s website, but that’s no fun so let’s examine each matchup.

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins

Time: 7:30 PM EST

TV: NBC Sports Network

Why should you care? The Bruins are once again projected to sit atop the Eastern Conference, but few teams can match their physicality like the Flyers. These two have had multiple playoff series in the last five years, adding intrigue to this one.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

Time: 7PM EST

TV: TVA Sports, Sportsnet

Why should you care? You shouldn’t have to ask this question if you’re Canadian. Otherwise, you should still watch. This is one of the oldest sports rivalries in North America and it features two teams with designs on the playoffs. The Canadiens want to finish what they started when they made the Eastern Conference Finals last season and the Leafs want to try this whole building-a-team-the-smart-way thing. Try it out, folks. The blood feud is real.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames

Time: 10PM EST

TV: TVA Sports 2, Sportsnet

Why should you care? Oh boy, take the ‘if you’re Canadian’ and multiply it by two. You better be really Canadian to enjoy this one because not much is expected of either of these teams, but boy do they hate each other. No other sport looks better when two teams really dislike each other than hockey.

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings

Time: 10:30PM EST

TV: NBC Sports Network (after Flyers/Bruins)

Why should you care? Of course, if you’re going to watch a blood feud, make it arguably the best one in pro hockey right now. The Kings are the defending champs, and the Sharks will have to watch their second Cup banner get raised to the rafters. Unless you never watched last year’s NHL playoffs, this matchup needs no introduction.
