The Chicago Bears are sitting at 2-3 after two straight disappointing losses to the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers, and a large portion of the blame belongs on Jay Cutler’s shoulders. He has been throwing some interceptions in clutch circumstances, and they have led to easy scores for opponents. If the Bears want to turn things back around and make the playoffs, they are going to need Cutler to figure things out and begin playing better football.

Cutler has thrown for 1,295 yards and 12 touchdowns, but has also thrown six costly interceptions. Chicago’s offense has the potential to be very special, but they simply haven’t lived up to the expectations that were set for them prior to the season. Part of Cutler’s problem has been bad routes from his wide receivers, but the last couple games have been him trying to make lays when no plays were there to be made.
Head coach Marc Trestman has extreme confidence in Cutler and the offense, but he might need to begin switching things up. Matt Forte has been used fairly inconsistently once again this season, but did receive a bulk of carries last week. That needs to be the case once again, and they need to continue using him out of the backfield as a receiver as well.
Martellus Bennett is one of the best tight ends in the NFL, and it might be wise to give him more targets as the season moves forward. Both Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall have been dealing with injury issues this season, which has also been a concern. The Bears need to get healthy, and they need to play up to their potential.
Chicago still has plenty of talent and potential to get back into the playoff picture, but they need their quarterback to make smart decisions and limit turnovers. Cutler has shown the potential this year to lead a very dangerous Bears’ offense, but that hasn’t been consistent. Consistency is one of the most important things in football, and Chicago has to find it.
It will be interesting to see what ends up happening over the next few weeks. If the Bears are able to figure things out, they will get back to being one of the better teams in the NFC. They need Cutler and the offense to step up, but the defense also needs to turn things around.
Over the next few weeks, the Bears will be playing for their playoff chances and will show exactly what type of team they are.
