Brian Cashman agreed to a three-year contract extension to remain the general manager of the New York Yankees on Friday.
Teams aren’t supposed to announce major moves during the postseason. Apparently the New York Yankees didn’t get that memo, because they announced a three-year contract extension with general manager Brian Cashman on Friday.

General manager extensions wouldn’t all be considered big news, but they are when it’s the Yankees and when it’s Cashman. Asked about the extension and what his plans are moving forward, Cashman said the following (via MLB.com):
"“Being in this chair for 17 years, I’d say every winter has got its challenges,” Cashman said. “I don’t feel that this one is any different in terms of challenges. The bottom line is, we want to maintain our strengths and attack our weaknesses.”"
As his first order of business, Cashman dismissed two coaches, including longtime hitting coach Kevin Long.
"Financial terms of Cashman’s agreement were not disclosed. In an initial order of business, Cashman announced that the Yankees have dismissed hitting coach Kevin Long and first-base coach Mick Kelleher, both of whom were under contract through 2015."
The moves have not been perfect for the Yankees in recent seasons, but they are consistently competitive. They managed to be relevant for much of the 2014 season despite a nasty rash of injuries and thanks to some creative moves from Cashman at the trade deadline.
When it comes to handling the pressure that comes with the big Yankees’ payroll, Cashman is uniquely equipped to handle those challenges and build a successful roster. Furthermore, the Yankees might benefit from sticking with an established guy in the front office as they deal with some odd challenges in the coming seasons.
Namely, one odd challenge. Specifically, Alex Rodriguez.
