College football: tracking the unbeaten teams

With all of the carnage that took place last week, I think it is wise to do this piece every week. At least until there are no unbeaten teams left. Due to that, this will mostly be how each team will fare this week instead of looking into the future.

More from College Football Odds

Seven teams lost for the first time last weekend. That leaves us with just ten undefeated teams left. Three of them reside in the SEC West.

Florida State(5-0) at Syracuse: The Orange needed double overtime to dispose of 1-AA Villanova, and are on a three game losing streak. That said, the Seminoles have had issues with orange teams so far this season. Oklahoma State gave them a fight, and Clemson took them to overtime. Syracuse is nowhere near the caliber of those two teams. They may stay close for a half, but if they manage to avoid getting covered (-24.5), that should count as a victory….

Georgia Tech (5-0) vs. Duke: The Blue Devils are good enough to give Tech a run for their money. That said, Duke lost to a Miami team that Georgia Tech beat the very next week. That and Duke hasn’t won in Atlanta in 20 years. They are due. This could be where Tech takes loss number one. If they do manage to win this, the ACC Coastal is likely theirs to lose.

Baylor(5-0) vs. TCU(4-0): The Horned Frogs looked very good against a high-powered Oklahoma offense. Baylor proved that they can win even if Bryce Petty has a bad game. The Texas defense did everything they could against Baylor, but the Bears still pulled away. Can they do the same even if TCU shuts down Petty?

Notre Dame(5-0) vs. North Carolina: The Tarheels may have the worst defense of any power five team. They won’t be able to put up much of a fight against the stout Irish defense.

Marshall(5-0) vs. Middle Tennessee State: Believe it or not, the Blue Raiders might be the toughest test left on Marshall’s schedule. A big bowl payday awaits the Herd so long as they don’t trip up somewhere along the way.

Arizona(5-0) vs. USC: The Wildcats look well put together, and have a very balanced offense. This could spell trouble for a USC team that couldn’t stop Arizona State when the game depended on it. The only thing that the Wildcats need to worry about is Duck hangover. They have the talent to keep this USC defense on their heels.

Auburn(5-0) at Mississippi State(5-0): This is the marquee game of the weekend, and rightfully so. These teams are very similar in the way that they attack you, and the way that they play defense. I would give the slight advantage to Mississippi State since they are at home, but Auburn has proven again and again that they can show up for big games. They likely will again.

Mississippi(5-0) at Texas A&M: The Rebels have to tackle one of the toughest road venues the week after taking down Alabama. This one has hangover written all over it. That said, the A&M defense can be had. If Bo Wallace plays another good game, the Rebels can take this.

Prediction: We know that two of the undefeated teams must lose. The only ones that are really safe are Florida State and Notre Dame. The rest all have somewhat tough games this week. I am guessing that by Sunday we will have six undefeated teams left. Which ones will lose? You will just have to check my picks against the spread to find out!
