Over the last few months, the Florida State Seminoles have stayed silent when it comes to the Jameis Winston investigation. Although no charges were ever brought against Jameis Winston after he was accused of sexual assault in 2012, Florida State is being investigated for possible infractions related to Title IX. Because no charges were ever filed against Jameis Winston, the school didn’t file a Title IV report.
Florida State sent out an e-mail explaining their silence and detailing the way they handled the investigation and a timeline of the events.
"NOTE TO MEDIA: The following letter was sent to members of the Florida State University community Friday, Oct. 10, 2014.An open letter to the Florida State University community:In the face of misinformation in the media during the past 10 months, Florida State University has maintained a deliberate silence about how we have handled the sexual assault allegation made against a prominent athlete. The University has remained silent for one reason: To protect our students, who are after all our highest priority. But as we expect other stories to appear, it is abundantly clear that the continual drumbeat of misinformation about the University’s actions causes harm to our students, faculty, alumni, supporters and the FSU community as a whole. Because of this, and within the constraints of state and federal privacy laws, we want to share with you more detail to set the record straight."
