In a move that is a smart and obvious one, the San Jose Police Department announced on Friday that they will no longer perform any off-duty work for the San Francisco 49ers. The ongoing investigation into Ray McDonald and his domestic violence case is the reasoning for the move.
The announcement was made by the police department in a release to the San Jose Mercury News by police chief Larry Esquivel.
“Due to the complexities of the investigation, both criminally and administratively, we feel that it is in our best interest to suspend all San Francisco 49er secondary employment related assignments until further notice,” Esquivel said.
One of the officers that was moonlighting for the 49ers was at the house of McDonald on the night that the alleged domestic violence occurred. Therefore, it’s an obvious conflict of interest for the police department to work with the organization in the foreseeable future.
There’s still no word on how much longer the investigation into McDonald may take, but until a conclusion is reached, he remains on the team as he has not yet been formally charged with anything.
