Outfielder Melky Cabrera can become a free agent this winter, and while there’s been no extension reached between him and the Toronto Blue Jays, he and the club have had a dialogue regarding a new deal.
Melky Cabrera’s two-year, $13-million-dollar contract with the Toronto Blue Jays ends this winter, and while the two sides aren’t close to an extension, Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said there’s been a dialogue between the club and Cabrera, and no one should assume there haven’t been contract figures exchanged.

Cabrera had an injury-plagued 2013 campaign that limited him to 88 games for the Jays, but Cabrera bounced back in 2014, hitting 16 home runs and batting .301 with a .351 on base percentage. Fangraphs rated the left fielder as 2.6 wins above replacement, and he just turned 30 in August, so Toronto’s interest in keeping Cabrera is understandable. Cabrera did finish the season on the disabled list after breaking his pinky, but he still played in 139 games in 2014.
Anthopoulos said there were a few free agents the Blue Jays would love to add, but Toronto doesn’t comment publicly on contract extension negotiations, so there’s no information regarding if he thinks the Blue Jays and Cabrera are close to a deal, or if it’s just the sides keeping the channels open.
