After dealing Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings, the Toronto Raptors took off. They finished with a record of 48-34 and won the Atlantic Division but were knocked off in a tough seven-game series by the Brooklyn Nets in the first round. Now, the Toronto Raptors are looking to take the next step.
Moke Hamilton of Basketball Insiders believes the Toronto Raptors need another scorer to become a true contender in the Eastern Conference.
"The final answer is probably find another scorer. I love Jonas Valanciunas and he may emerge as the type of low-post force that Marc Gasol is… But until he does, the Raptors will be at least one player short of entering that class. In today’s league, I think you need three guys who are capable of creating their own shots and/or giving you 20 points in a playoff game in order to enter the elite class, and I think the Raptors only have two, at best.I do think the Raptors are the class of the Atlantic, and I love the Lou Williams acquisition for them."
Hamilton points to some big names like Gasol, Detroit Pistons’ power forward Greg Monroe and Portland Trail Blazers’ big man LaMarcus Aldridge. Those seem like long-shots with the possible exception of Monroe. Monroe signed his qualifying offer rather than long-term deal with the Detroit Pistons, making him an unrestricted free agent. He’d be an excellent fit for the Toronto Raptors but they’d have to get very creative to acquire him.
