Los Angeles NFL team a possibility, according to the mayor

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti says that an NFL team in Los Angeles could happen sooner than you think.

Los Angeles NFL fans are currently lacking their own NFL team. The Chargers are in nearby San Diego, the Raiders left town for Oakland before the 1995 season, and the Rams left for St. Louis at the same time.

According to Mayor Eric Garcetti, this situation might be rectified soon. On a recent radio appearance, he said that it’s “highly likely” that a team will come to LA next year.

There are a few things that could have prevented that, chief among them being the expiration of an agreement for a football stadium to be built in downtown LA. That has been solved, with a six month extension on the deal between the city’s Economic Development Committee and Anschutz Entertainment Group, which now has until April to convince an NFL team to come to the City of Angels.

NFL officials continue to address the idea of bringing a team to the second biggest TV market in the United States. Garcetti says that the recent sale of the Los Angeles Clippers shows how valuable a sports franchise in LA can be, and he believes the NFL will want to capitalize on that potential financial windfall.

There’s still no official word on which team would come to Los Angeles, but rumors in the past have included either the Raiders or Rams moving back, or the Jacksonville Jaguars making the trip across the country. The Jaguars haven’t really developed a strong fan base in Florida, largely thanks to their complete ineptitude on the field, and moving to Los Angeles would almost definitely mean a huge influx of money for owner Shad Khan.

Due to the enormous potential financial gain for the NFL and whatever team moves to LA, it seems inevitable that a team will end up there at some point, probably sooner rather than later. But could it really happen as soon as 2015? Stay tuned. We’ll find out soon.
