Can John Wall end up taking home a MVP trophy?

More from NBA

The 2014-15 NBA season is upon us, and there are plenty of things going on at this point in time to have fans already excited for the season. Every year there are new players that step up and force their name into the national coverage. This season, there are quite a few that are expecting Washington Wizards’ John Wall to be a potential NBA MVP candidate.

It’s possible that those expectations could be wrong, but he does seem to be in line for an improved season.

From BleacherReport.com:

"Last season, the statistical model projected Wall as the 14th-most likely MVP candidate, just behind Damian Lillard and just ahead of Kyle Lowry. The biggest shortcoming in his statistical profile was the low winning percentage of his team—just .537 for the Washington Wizards last season. After a strong postseason performance, the Wizards are a team that looks to be on an upward trajectory. Even if Wall averaged the exact same statistical line as he did last season, doing it on a team that won 55 games would have moved Wall up to the eighth-most likely MVP candidate, jumping ahead of players like Paul George and Kevin Love."

Wall did play a great season last year with the Wizards, playing in and starting all 82 regular season games. He averaged 19.3 point, 8.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game. His shooting percentages were solid as well at 43.3 percent from the floor and 35.1 percent from behind the three-point arc.

At just 24 years of age, Wall has plenty of room to improve and move forward. The type of numbers that he put up last season are definitely enough to get him in the conversation, but he’ll need to do a bit more in order to actually win the award. Washington improving their win total will help, but he needs to take his numbers a bit higher as well.

There is no doubt that the Wizards are going to be an even better team this year than they were last, but they need to stay healthy. They are already going to be dealing with missing Bradley Beal for a good chunk of time due to a wrist injury, which means that Wall is going to have to take even more of a load onto his own shoulders. Obviously that will work well for his MVP possibilities.

Expect a big season from Wall this season, and don’t be surprised to see him force his name into the MVP conversation.
