Brian Scalabrine: LeBron James Only Cares About Legacy, Not Ohio
By Sam Richmond
Brian Scalabrine says LeBron James is being disingenuous about his motives to return to the Cavaliers.
Brian Scalabrine is not buying the message that NBA star LeBron James is selling.
James has pushed the narrative that his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is primarily about his love for Cleveland and Ohio. However, Scalabrine said on Jim Rome on Showtime that James isn’t being honest.
James announced his decision to return to the Cavaliers this summer in what was essentially an ode to Northeast Ohio and Cleveland in Sports Illustrated.
It begins:
"Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now."

While it’s possible James is being truthful here, it’s also possible that James saw Dwyane Wade aging and realized he might have a better chance to win and help his legacy by leaving the Miami Heat and teaming up with Kyrie Irving and ultimately forming a super-team with Kevin Love in Cleveland.
No one will ever know the truth. James would never admit that the motives behind his decision aren’t as pure as people believe currently believe them to be.
But it’s pretty clear that Scalabrine is among those that believe LeBron has misled everybody about his return home.
