Erik Spoelstra says that there are too many NBA games.

The NBA announced on Tuesday that it was going to test out the idea of a shorter game by having the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets play a 44-minute preseason game Sunday.

Many thought this was a good idea and one that if implemented league-wide at some point could reduce the wear and tear on the athletes’ bodies. However, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra argued that the amount of games is the issue, rather than the length of them.

From ESPN:

"“I don’t think it’s a matter of how long the game is,” Spoelstra said. “I think there’s too many games, to be frank. I think if there’s some way to find a way to cut out some of the back-to-backs so there aren’t 20-plus of them. I think that’s the bigger issue, not shaving off four minutes in a particular game. But I’m open to seeing what happens with that.”“I think everybody probably agrees there’s too many games in a short period of time.”"

Sproelstra, as he hints at, is far from the first to suggest that there are too many games and his point is well taken. The on-the-court product would likely benefit from a decrease in the amount of games played.

However, with arenas needing to be filled and networks needing to fill programming, it might not be in the NBA’s financial interest to heed Spo’s advice here.
