WWE Raw: Ambrose, Orton, Biggest Hits And Misses

facebooktwitterreddit

Two main event matches for Hell in a Cell were revealed during last night’s WWE Monday Night Raw as John Cena will take on Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose will get Seth Rollins in Hell in a Cell in two weeks.

It’s been a while since Raw had a main event that meant something. Fans were given an early gift as The Authority booked the Contract On A Pole Match between John Cena and Dean Ambrose for later in the night. You were treated to two matches featuring Cena and Ambrose and a main event that had meaning.

Raw also consisted of matches that had meaning and substance. From Randy Orton taking on Dolph Ziggler to Sheamus facing The Miz, each match progressed the superstars and the storylines.

But then there were segments and matches that didn’t mean much and were maybe given a little bit too much time. And enough of the guest hosts. Please.

Here are my hits and misses from last night’s WWE Monday Night Raw:

Hits

John Cena and Dean Ambrose twice in one night

I love the booking to start the show. You put Cena and Ambrose together in a tag team to face The Usos and Gold and Stardust. With this, you created the unknown of whether Cena and Ambrose can co-exist for the greater good and you also created fresh matchups and superstars facing each other for the first time.

Before finding out that Cena and Ambrose would face each other later in the night, I would have loved to see this match be for the Tag Team championship and put the titles on Cena and Ambrose, making the feud between these two interesting for weeks to come. Ulitmately, they would drop the titles on a mistake by Cena or Ambrose, but it would bring relevance to the titles while Brock Lesnar is away.

Back to the segment on Raw, you book Cena vs. Ambrose and you have a main event that means something. You bring down The Authority and have them interfere, meaning you should see a clean match between Ambrose and Cena later in the year.

I like how they playing up Ambrose as the next big superstar with Roman Reigns on the shelf. Ambrose is the future, and getting some nice words from Ambrose helps his cause.

Teasing Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton

Another possible match for later in the year is Rollins vs. Orton. They have been teasing this with tension between the two for weeks and after Hell in a Cell, you could see these two build a program and have some terrific matches.

More importantly, it will make Orton relevant again instead of tag teaming with Kane or facing John Cena for the thousandth time. It could also tease a possible break from The Authority and you can keep Orton as a heel while you do it.

It was great to see Orton and Dolph Ziggler have a match with an awesome ending as Orton finds another way to execute the RKO. Ziggler is one of the best performers in the ring and sold the move perfectly.

Mix in Rollins watching the match from the ramp, and you tease a feud between the stars.

While the match between Rollins and Jack Swagger was predictable, considering where both superstars are at right now, having the reverse action take place as Orton comes out for Rollins’ match. It furthers the storyline while hooking the audience to see what happens next.

Damien Mizdow continues to steal the show

WWE knows they have something in Damien Mizdow. The cameras were focused on Mizdow more this week than previous weeks. Featuring Mizdow raises his character and rightfully so. The segments have been hilarious and he is starting to steal the show.

While it’s taking away thunder from The Miz, it’s perfect to set something up for a feud between Mizdow and The Miz. Jealously could be the reason why The Miz turns on Mizdow, which keeps Mizdow as a favorite with the crowd and set up a possible great program between the two.

I would even keep Mizdow being the stunt double, featuring The Miz’s music, wardrobe and moves, making The Miz even more upset and look more of a strong heel.

Misses

Enough of the guest hosts

I get it. Both guest hosts of Raw last night are from Atlanta. The show is taking place from there. But there are four million people watching the show who are not from Atlanta. No one cares about what or who these guest hosts are. Unless you put former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson as the guest host; more of the country would know who he is.

One reason for the possible promotion of these shows are that they both fall under the NBC Universal umbrella, which is partnered with WWE. As were Kathie Lee and Hoda.

There has to be something in the deal between the WWE and NBC that allows them to feature these guest hosts. If that is the case, expect more in the coming weeks.

Where have Nikki and Brie Bella gone?

These two were in the spotlight at Summerslam and given major segment time on Raw during the summer. Now, they were regulated to competing in a match where the Total Divas were featured.

Did WWE creative run out of things to do with these two? While they weren’t the best on the microphone, they were interesting considering the storyline and how the two got to the point of feuding.

Now, they both are lost in the Divas segment and seem to have no plan in place. That needs to change.

Moore Thoughts: They need to stop pushing the Big Show; put Rusev over and move on…Jack Swagger is not over anymore; fewer and fewer fans are chanting ‘We The People’…I’m looking forward to where the Wyatt’s go from these vignettes.
