Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith is headed for an MRI after his ankle bothered him during Wednesday’s  practice.

The offensive line has been the backbone of the Dallas Cowboys during their incredible 5-1 to start the season. The line has done a fantastic job of opening up holes for running back DeMarco Murray and giving quarterback Tony Romo enough time to find playmakers such as Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams.

So, the news that tackle Tyron Smith, perhaps the team’s best lineman, was bothered by his ankle in practice and is headed for an MRI is potentially devastating news for Dallas.

The Star-Telegram has more details:

"Smith’s ankle, which he apparently rolled in Sunday’s game, bothered him during individual drills Wednesday. The starting left tackle sat out the team portion of practice before heading for tests to determine the severity."

The Cowboys are already hurting at the tackle position, with Doug Free out of the lineup for the next 3-4 weeks after he fractured his foot during Week 6.

This bad news comes on the same day that Smith was awarded the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week award, becoming the first offensive lineman to earn such an honor in 10 years. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke very highly of Smith to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, highlighting his importance to this team.

The Cowboys drafted Smith with the No. 9 overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.
