Continuing their trend of locking up key components to their Stanley Cup title team, the Kings signed defenseman Jake Muzzin to a five-year deal that keeps him in Los Angeles through the 2019-20 season.

Muzzin’s deal is a reported $20 million, a significant raise for the 25-year-old, who was in the final year of a two-year, $2 million deal. He was also slated to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

The signing is the latest for the Kings, who have already locked up goalie Jonathan Quick, forwards Marion Gaborik, Dustin Brown, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter along with defensemen Drew Doughty and Slava Voynov, who each signed larger deals than Muzzin among the team’s defensemen.

Each of the players signed long term are under 30, with the 32-year-old Gaborik being the sole exception.

Muzzin scored a career-high 24 points during last season, yet stepped his game up during the playoffs, as he scored six goals and 12 points. He also was second among all Kings players with an average time on ice of 23:41. The native of Woodstock, Ontario has yet to play this season, as Muzzin is dealing with a upper body injury that has sidelined him for much of training camp and the preseason.

Originally drafted by the Penguins in the fifth round of the 2007 Entry Draft, Muzzin joined the Kings as a free agent in January 2010. He appeared in 11 games in the 2010-11 season, but spent the Kings’ 2011-12 Stanley Cup title run in the minors with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League. Muzzin scored 14 goals and 31 points with Los Angeles in 2012-13.
