Two of the nation’s premier college football programs agreed to a home-and-home series, as the LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns agreed in principle to face off during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
The agreement will have the Tigers visiting Austin in 2019, with the Longhorns making the trek to Baton Rouge the following season.
By agreeing to the series, it would mark the first time since 2002 that the two programs will face off. Texas leads the series by a 8-6-1 count, winning the previous meeting in a 35-20 decision in the 2003 Cotton Bowl. Texas wide receiver Roy Williams caught four passes for 139 yards and a touchdown and added a 39-yard scoring run to lift the Longhorns to victory, while Chris Simms threw for 269 yards and two scores for Texas.
Prior to the 2003 contest, the two schools played in the 1963 Cotton Bowl in which LSU captured a 13-0 victory over Texas. The series began in 1902, with the Longhorns once winning four straight games over the Tigers between 1941 and 1952.
Texas has also agreed to a three-game series with South Florida, with the Longhorns hosting games in 2019 and 2024, while the Bulls will host the game in Tampa in 2022. It would mark the first time the two schools will have faced off on the gridiron.
By adding LSU, Texas replaces Notre Dame as one of their marquee opponents. The Fighting Irish cancelled games against Texas that were slated in the seasons that the Tigers have filled in.
The Longhorns will have home and home series with Notre Dame (2015-16), USC (2017-18), Ohio State (2022-23) and Michigan (2024 and 2027).
