NFL television viewership is increasing despite off-the-field controversies.

One could say the NFL has had a tumultuous start to the 2014 season. Controversies, most notably involving Ray Rice (domestic abuse) and Adrian Peterson (child abuse), have resulted in bad publicity for the league and many calling for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s job due to how the incidents were handled.

However, that hasn’t resulted in less interest in the game. In fact, NFL television viewership has increased this season, according to the Boston Herald.

"An average of 18.2 million people have tuned in to each game this season, according to Nielsen and NFL PR. That’s a 6 percent improvement compared to 2013, and a 9 percent increase over 2012 through Week 5. Fifteen of the most-watched TV shows since Labor Day have been NFL contests. The New York Times reported yesterday that two of the top three rated broadcast and cable shows last week were NFL affairs. The hometown Patriots drew an 11.7 rating for their Sunday night game against the Bengals Oct. 5, and the Thursday night clunker between the Vikings and Packers Oct. 2 hauled in a 9.8 share. Even though the aggregate score of Thursday night football games has been 238-88 this season, ratings are 56 percent better than last year."

These numbers just go to show how people love football and will continue to watch it regardless of if their uncomfortable with how the league operates.

Sure, it’s not a good thing for the league that many aren’t satisfied with how they do their business. But, at the end of the day, it doesn’t appear that such dissatisfaction is hurting their business, either.
