One of the

NFL’s

top tight ends,

Jimmy Graham

returned to practice Thursday afternoon, albeit in a limited role.

Even though Graham also missed practice Wednesday, head coach Sean Payton said that the team hopes he can play against the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon.

Graham and quarterback Drew Brees have formed one of the league’s most potent combos and have worked together for four-plus years. In that time, they have combined for 44 touchdowns in 67 games.

Through five games, Graham has just three touchdowns and 34 catches.  Graham was injured in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Bucs and the thought was he would at least two weeks.

Fast-forward to Week 7 and Saints head coach Sean Payton said the team was “still optimistic.” Mike Triplett of ESPN NFL Nation reported the story today:

Is it a big deal if he doesn’t practice all week but is ready to go Sunday? I wouldn’t think so. The only thing that really matters is the health of Jimmy Graham. If Graham was a rookie or maybe even a second-year player, I would say it might matter. Not with Jimmy Graham.

Drew Brees has Marques Colston and Brandin Cooks, but would love his number one target against the league’s best pass defense in Detroit this Sunday.
