Don Mattingly will return to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers next season after losing in the NLDS to the St. Louis Cardinals

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS after a 94-68 record in the regular season which prompted whispers that Don Mattingly could be out as the team’s manager.

Mattingly will ‘definitely’ return as the team’s manager in 2015, according to new president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman who was introduced on Friday and put to bed any rumors that a new manager would be following him to L.A.

“We’re very aligned on a lot of things philosophically and have thoroughly enjoyed those conversations,” Friedman said on his relationship with Mattingly, via the L.A. Times. “We’re going to get together next week and I’ll look forward to building that relationship.”

With Friedman leaving the Tampa Bay Rays after helping build that franchise to a consistent playoff contender over the better part of the decade, there were thoughts that he could bring Rays manager Joe Maddon with him to the Dodgers.

“I have a tremendous personal relationship with Joe. He’s a friend of mine. We have a really good professional relationship as well,” Friedman said.

“That being said, Joe is now working with [Rays President] Matt Silverman and baseball operations people there and I’m excited about working with Donnie. I’m going into it with the mind-set that we’re going to work together for a long time. I had one manager in the 10 years I’ve been doing this and I’m looking forward to working with Donnie for a long time.”

With Mattingly returning to the bench for 2015, maybe he can take the time this offseason to remember not to bench Yasiel Puig with the season on the line no matter if he’s struggling or not.

The Dodgers have one of the highest payrolls in MLB and until the Dodgers win the elusive World Series, Mattingly may have to get used to being on the hot seat.
