Who are the three stars of the second week of NHL action?

We’ve reached the end of the second week of the 2014-15 NHL regular season and with every team having played a handful of games, it is becoming clear which teams are off to a strong start and which teams may already be gunning for the draft lottery. Still, we must keep in mind that we are dealing with a small sample size. Then again, this is a 3 Stars of the Week post you are reading, where all we deal with is small sample size.

This is the second edition of the Three Stars of the Week and we will recognize three players who had outstanding performances during the NHL’s second week of regular season action. Check back every Sunday for a new list of three stars for the previous week’s play.

No. 1 Star: Mikkel Boedker

Mikkel Boedker is on a three game point streak to start the season, scoring a goal in each of the Coyotes first two games. However, that isn’t the reason why he is this week’s number one star.

Boedker earned his first career hat trick in a 7-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night. He also added an assist for good measure, making it a four point night. The Coyotes got off to a slow start, but Boedker electrified the offense and allowed for the ensuing domination.

Boedker currently leads the Coyotes with six points (5 goals and 1 assist) and at one point this week was actually tied for second in the NHL for goals.

Boedker uses a combination of speed and strength to get in front of the net and chip in short goals. He doesn’t score highlight reel goals and he plays in a market that is often ignored, but Boedker is one of the rising stars on the Arizona Coyotes.

No. 2 Star: Tyler Seguin

Tyler Seguin started the week off with a hat trick in a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. Seguin scored Dallas’ first goal of the game and his second goal helped Dallas regain the lead in the third period. He added the empty netter to put the game away and earn his fifth career hat trick.

Seguin followed his impressive performance against Columbus by scoring the game winning goal with 2.9 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Stars a 3-2 come from behind win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Seguin’s four goals currently give him the lead on the Dallas Stars roster and he is second in points (4) to Jamie Benn who leads the Stars with five (2 goals, 3 assists).

Seguin is currently averaging 18.76 TOI / game and has a Corsi Rel% of 9.61.

No. 3 Star: Jaden Schwartz

Jaden Schwartz currently leads the Blues with seven points in four games, mostly thanks to a four point night and a hat trick against the Arizona Coyotes last night. Schwartz camped out in front of the net on each of his goals and his line mates were able to get him the puck. Schwartz completed the hat trick with 2.1 seconds left in the game with the St. Louis Blues on the power play.

Schwartz also had an assist on the Blues first goal of the night, which gave them a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. After that it was all St. Louis in a 6-1 rout of the Coyotes.

"It was one of those nights when I was in the slot and the puck kept finding me. Everyone has a game like that once in a while, and tonight was one for me."
