Chris Bosh says he was truly conflicted about whether to re-sign with the Miami Heat or sign with the Houston Rockets this summer.

There was time during this past NBA offseason — in the immediate aftermath of LeBron James making his decision to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers known — when it appeared to be a lock that Chris Bosh would join Dwight Howard, James Harden and the Houston Rockets.

However, hours after James announced his choice in Sports Illustrated, Bosh agreed to re-sign with the Miami Heat on a massive $118 million deal.

Many were immediately confused about Bosh’s choice and there was some speculation that Bosh may have mislead the Rockets and was planning on returning to the Heat all along.

The Miami center is insisting that this isn’t the case and that he was truly conflicted about what to do.

From the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

"What Bosh wanted to make clear in advance was that he in no way was playing the Rockets, that he was close — very close — to creating his own new Big Three in his home state of Texas alongside Dwight Howard and James Harden.“I still had to finish conversations with the Heat,” Bosh said of those hectic hours on July 11, when he handled his negotiations by phone from Africa, where he was on a vacation and promotional tour. “Everybody was aware, all parties were aware. It was always continuing conversations. I never made any commitments. I never wanted to put anybody in the position to make them feel like I said something and I reneged on the whole thing. So I just kept it open."

There’s no reason to believe Bosh is lying here. It seems likely Bosh would be playing in Houston right now had Miami not offered him a max contract ($30 million more than the Rockets could offer him).

But the Heat did, so Bosh remains in Miami and Houston can only think about what could have been.
