Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke had an up-and-down rookie season but many are expecting big things from in the 2014-2015 NBA season
[realted-category]There was a time when some thought Trey Burke would be one of the top two or three selections in the 2013 NBA Draft. He won nearly every individual award and led the Michigan Wolverines to the National Championship Game in the 2012-2013. However, he fell all the way to nine where the Utah Jazz acquired him in a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Like many probably expected, Trey Burke had an up-and-down rookie year but still managed to finish third in Rookie of the Year Voting, even landing a first place vote. Philadelphia 76ers‘ point guard Michael Carter-Williams won the award while Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo finished second.
The Jazz used the fifth-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Australian point guard Dante Exum, which threw some off but it looked like they believe they can eventually play the two together.
Either way, most expect Trey Burke to show great improvement in his second season.
“He has been getting to the basket more, and I’ve been impressed a few times by how he’s changed speeds and shown some burst,” writes Nate Duncan of Basketball Insiders. “Defensively he’s really been working on getting over picks, and that is something that should carry over as well. Statistical translations like his odds of improving as well. I think he should be a lot better overall.”
Trey Burke’s size is always going to be an issue but that shouldn’t stop him from developing into a solid player.
Trey Burke averaged 12.8 points, 5.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 38.0% from the field, 33.0% from beyond the arc 90.3% from the free throw line last season.
