After Bayern Munich blew out AS Roma fans in a Champions League group stage game, fans showed off some sportsmanship and traded scarves.

In the soccer world, one of the coolest displays of sportsmanship is the exchanging of jerseys after the game. It is something rarely done in American sports and when it is done it is almost newsworthy and praised.

But this is a routine scene in soccer, especially in European countries.

Sometimes that sportsmanship carries into the crowd, and that was the case with Bayern Munich and AS Roma fans after their Champions League match on Tuesday. After the game fans from both clubs exchanged scarves, carrying the on-field tradition between competitors into the stands, and it is absolutely beautiful.

What makes this particularly interesting is how brutal the game was between Bayern Munich and AS Roma. The Bundesliga side were up 5-0 in the first half, before going on to win 7-1. In a situation like that, home fans — Roma fans in this case — typically would have left, but some hung around.

Of course these are two teams that don’t typically play one another, so they’re not league rivals and there is no previously developed ill-will.

There needs to be more of this, not only in soccer matches in Europe, but in all sports.
