The Braves already have a team president, in longtime executive John Schuerholz, who was Atlanta’s GM opposite Hart when the Braves played the
in the 1995 World Series (and won), and Schuerholz also built the 1985 World Series-champion
, but as NBCSports.com’s Craig Calcaterra
, Schuerholz’s duties have extended beyond the baseball diamond for some time now, and the GM has been in charge of all baseball operations during that span, meaning it’s unclear exactly what Hart will be doing if the team does indeed hire a full-time general manager. Calcattera speculates the Braves could operate in a similar fashion as the
do with Theo Epstein as team president and Jed Hoyer as GM.
One possible candidate for the GM position under Hart is current Braves assistant GM, John Coppolella, a well-regarded assistant who has been mentioned by Calcattera and numerous other pundits as a future general manager, and if he’s not offered the position there’s a good chance another organization could try to poach him.
Hart also helped rebuild the Texas Rangers to prominence after 10 seasons as the Indians GM, and was their GM from 2001 until mid-2004, and remained with Texas as a senior adviser until 2013, when he joined the Braves in a similar, ambiguous role. He was named interim GM by Atlanta after Frank Wren was fired as GM in September. He has also done analyst work recently for MLB Network, and was a minor-league manager in the Baltimore Orioles system in the 1980’s.
