Tallahassee television station WCTV has reported that former Florida Supreme Court chief justice Major Harding will serve as the hearing officer for the disciplinary hearing for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

The 79-year-old Harding did confirm he would be serving as a hearing officer for a Florida State student, but said he was not given a name of the student in question.

Jameis Winston, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is awaiting a hearing from the university regarding a possible student code of conduct violation from the December 2012 allegation of a sexual assault of a female student. Winston was never charged with the alleged assault after it was determined sufficient evidence was lacking that would have allowed the case for move forward. He was charged earlier this year with shoplifting crab legs and missed the Seminoles’ game against Clemson last month after he was suspended for using an obscene phrase on campus.

Last week’s win over Notre Dame was nearly overshadowed by accusations that Winston had committed violations for use of his autograph. Winston has not considered either leaving the team nor dropping out of school, despite the accusations and the impending hearing.

Harding served as the state’s chief justice from 1998 to 2000, as he served on the court during the electoral dispute between George W. Bush and Al Gore regarding the 2000 Presidential race. He was originally named to the Florida Supreme Court in 1991 and served until 2002.
