Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy unloaded on his teammates by calling them ‘soft,’ marking the second time this month he has called out the unit in public.
“I mean, if you look out there on tape and you see a bunch of guys sitting on blocks, are you not earning the title of being soft?” McCoy told ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas. “I mean, guys get so sensitive around the league, but we have to be men. This is a man’s league. This is a man’s league, and we’re professionals.
“Guys have issues with criticism. I’ve been getting criticized since I’ve been in the NFL, and I don’t even feel it anymore. It is what it is.”
McCoy’s frustrations stem from the Buccaneers’ 1-5 start, as the defense has allowed a league-worst 422.8 yards per game while allowing at least 37 points in three of their last four games entering Sunday’s home game against the Minnesota Vikings.
“There’s always a reason why this is happening or why that’s happening,” McCoy said. “It has to stop. We just have to say, ‘OK, I did wrong, I didn’t win that one, I have to win the next one and the one after that.’
Earlier this month, McCoy vocalized how the team was not as good as it should have been at this point of the season.
The team has also had speeches from linebacker Lavonte David, quarterback Luke McCown and wide receiver Vincent Jackson, with very little impact.
