Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was hobbled for most of the second half of the MLB season with an injured ankle, and he had surgery to repair the problems recently.

Miguel Cabrera had a good season individually (once again) for the Detroit Tigers, but was also (once again) hampered late in the season by an ankle injury due to bone spurs, and apparently the first baseman also had a stress fracture, reports MLB.com’s Jason Beck:

That Cabrera had the surgery (or the bone spurs) is no surprise, but the stress ankle fracture is sort of one, and it seems to help clarify just where Cabrera’s power stroke went for most of the second half of the year. Cabrera had 52 doubles, which lead the league, but only 25 home runs (his lowest total with the Tigers), and just 18 of those doubles where in the second half. Cabrera did hit eight home runs in September to help boost Detroit to the AL Central crown, which eclipsed the seven home run total he had in June, July and August.

Cabrera might be limited in spring training, but barring any setbacks he should be recovered in time to play Opening Day, at the latest.
