San Diego Chargers safety Jahleel Addae claimed he wasn’t concussed in the team’s Thursday Night Football match against the host Denver Broncos.

When fans and media saw Chargers safety Jahleel Addae take one big hit, then return, only to wobble frighteningly at the end of an ensuing play as if he was suffering a seizure, many criticized the team and the league for their handling of what should have been at least an extensive testing session on a man clearly suffering. Addae was quick to debunk that talk though, claiming he wasn’t concussed on either big play.

Addae took a big hit making a tackle on the first play of Thursday’s game, which knocked him motionless to the field. Addae quickly returned and, on a later play, he threw himself into a pile at the line of scrimmage, hitting the running back with the side of his head. The safety emerged disoriented and wobbly, prompting an uproar on social media as to why Addae had returned to play. Addae claims the injury was a stinger though, and that he was medically cleared to return to the game, per Michael Gehlken at U-T San Diego.

Unfortunately, as Deadspin points out, Gehlken tweeted earlier in the game that Addae’s medical check-up was ‘brief‘.

The worst part about this ordeal is that it feels like Addae and the team are conspiring to keep him on the field when clearly he should have been taken out of the football game after its first five seconds. The player never argues being put back in the game, so it’s on the team and the medical staff to exercise caution, yet that’s never what happens.

It’s a fine line for the NFL to toe as they don’t want to rule out players automatically after taking one big hit as that’s what happens in football, but something has to change in order to end these incidents. Unless Addae is hip to a robot dancing move we’ve yet to see, that man suffered a seizure on the field when he shouldn’t have even been out there, and precious little is being done about it.
