Pittsburgh had the worst start of a football game that I have ever seen. They fumbled an astonishing four times in the first five minutes of the game, losing them all. Georgia Tech wasted no time turning all of those into points either. They led 28-0 with 9:45 remaining in the first quarter! The Panthers ended up tying an FBS record with five lost fumbles in one quarter! Pitt was able to battle back to within 28-14 at the half, but they never got any closer.
Who would have thought that West Virginia will enter November with a chance to win the Big 12(10). They were picked by most experts, and myself, to finish in the bottom three of the conference. With their win over Baylor last weekend, and their win over Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday, that is exactly where they sit.
Maybe TCU will get some respect now. They set a school record for points with 82, which is also a Big 12(10) conference record. QB Trevone Boykin set a school record with seven touchdown passes. The Horned Frogs put up 31 points in the third, and scored double digits in every quarter against the worst defensive team in the Big 12(10), Texas Tech. Even the switch in coordinators hasn’t helped much. The last team to score 80 on a FBS opponent was Wisconsin, who racked up 83 on Indiana in 2010. By comparison, the basketball team topped 82 points just once all season!
Michigan State once again beat the tar out of Michigan. The score may not show just how bad this was. Michigan was held to zero yards rushing in the first half, which was better than last year, but is that what Michigan football has been reduced to? Not being as bad as last year? This game was never in question, and the only reason it wasn’t worse is because the Michigan defense played a pretty good game for the most part. And they still lost by 24 points. This was the largest margin of victory for the Spartans in the series since 1967. The garbage time touchdown allowed by the Spartans is the first touchdown Michigan has scored in the series since 2011.
Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato has thrown a touchdown pass in a NCAA record 40 straight games. And if you have seen Marshall’s remaining schedule, you know that this streak won’t be ending anytime soon…..
Is it just me, or does it feel like Kentucky is about where Dan Mullen had Mississippi State about two years ago. Kentucky is able to compete with most teams in the SEC now, which is light years ahead of where they were pre-Mark Stoops. The fact that they are in the SEC East is the lesser of two evils right now. They just have the feel of a program on the rise.
Washington State’s offense can be fun to watch, but their defense makes you feel sorry for them. They were at it again, giving up 59 points to the high-powered Arizona offense. The bad part? They aren’t even the worst defensive team in the conference! The Pac 12 is starting to look like the Big 12(10)!
