After trading for the former lottery pick last year, the Portland Trail Blazers will allow Thomas Robinson to hit free agency this upcoming summer.

The Portland Trail Blazers acquired Thomas Robinson this past year, making it his third team in as many years to have hosted him on a roster. For a former lottery pick who was selected in 2012, that’s a pretty depressing trip through the NBA so far. Robinson just hasn’t been able to find a system that suits him, but he’s going to get free range this upcoming summer.

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Portland Trail Blazers will not be picking up the fourth-year option on Thomas Robinson this summer and will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.

"The Portland Trail Blazers will let forward Thomas Robinson become an unrestricted free agent next summer, league sources told Yahoo Sports. The Blazers declined to pick up the fourth-year option – worth $4.6 million – on Robinson’s deal on Monday."

This is both bad news but good news for Robinson. On the one hand, he’s now failed with three NBA teams in as many years as he didn’t find a way to fit in their system. But what this will do is allow Robinson to find the right team and the right scheme to try and fit in.

Minnesota is a team to watch here, as Flip Saunders has already made it known that he would mind acquiring Robinson from the Blazers and could float an offer his way in the summer. For not though, this season will be all about Robinson proving that the Blazers made a mistake in earmarking him for free agency, as this could be the motivation he’s needed to make something of his career.
