There was a good chance that Madison Bumgarner was going to be World Series MVP anyway. Once he pitched five shutout innings in Game 7 of the World Series to lock up another championship for the San Francisco Giants, there was no doubt. It is the team’s third in five years, and it comes in a postseason in which Bumgarner inked his name alongside the all-time greats in baseball history.

Here is a friendly reminder that Bumgarner is just 25 years old.

Having set the record for innings in a postseason and lowered his career World Series ERA down into the 0.20 range, Bumgarner was named World Series MVP. He was the NLCS MVP, and now he is the World Series MVP.

In this World Series, Bumgarner pitched 21 innings. He allowed one run. There were other good performers for the Giants, guys like Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence, but Bumgarner was the obvious choice.

Putting great sports accomplishments into historical context is hard. Trying to compare Madison Bumgarner to other postseason heroes right now to say whether or not he is the “greatest of all time” is probably a useless exercise.

Suffice it to say that what Bumgarner did was special, and we just saw one of the best postseason performances ever. That’s enough, and it was spectacular to watch.
