Chicago Cubs To Name Joe Maddon New Manager As Soon As Friday Afternoon
By Josh Hill
The Chicago Cubs fired manager Rick Renteria on Friday afternoon to make way for the obvious hiring of Joe Maddon as the new skipper of the team.
All the Chicago Cubs needed to to was bump off their incumbent manager to make way for Joe Maddon to take the job. Rather than give anyone the run around about why Rick Renteria was fired on Friday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs were blunt and honest. Joe Maddon is expected to be named the Cubs manager as soon as this afternoon — and no one is at all surprised.

If you’re wondering if the Cubs are giving fans the runaround about the real reason Renteria was fired after his first season as manager, they’re not. In the press release announcing the firing of Renteria, the Cubs made specific and direct mention of Maddon as their top candidate for the job.
As Bob Nightengale reports, the Cubs should be announceing Maddon as their next manager as soon as this afternoon.
This is a sticky situation, as Renteria was fired before he could really settle into the job, but Joe Maddon was too good to pass up. For a team that hasn’t won’t the World Series since 1908, you have to bend the rules of baseball morality if you want to land the guy you need to end the suffering.
