Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, out since Oct. 11 with a broken hand, appears to be ahead of schedule in his recovery as he was throwing passes this week.

Deshaun Watson, Clemson’s true freshman quarterback who took over the starting job from senior Cole Stoudt earlier this season before breaking his hand, has resumed throwing in practice and appears on target to return by Nov. 15.

Watson is second in the nation in passing efficiency, trailing only Heisman Trophy favorite Marcus Mariota of Oregon, but has been out since breaking his hand in an Oct. 11 win over Louisville.

He resumed throwing this week, according to the Charleston Post & Courier.

"“Looked good,” offensive coordinator Chad Morris said. “I think he’s kind of surprised everybody how far along he is right now with everything. It was his first time back into it taking actual snaps and reps, so it was good to see him back in there.”"

Stoudt is still on target to start next Thursday when the 21st-ranked Tigers take on Wake Forest. Clemson is off this weekend.

But Watson could be available in an emergency situation, if necessary, and should be back in the starting lineup against Georgia Tech on Nov. 15, barring a setback.

Clemson (6-2) is 6-1 in the ACC’s Atlantic Division, trailing only No. 2-ranked Florida State. The Seminoles beat the Tigers in overtime on Sept. 20. Watson relieved Stoudt in that game and was named the starter the next week.

In Stoudt’s four starts against FBS competition, Clemson has averaged 17.8 points per game. Watson piloted the Tigers to 91 points in the two starts he was able to finish—50 against North Carolina and 41 against NC State.

Watson has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,176 yards and 12 touchdowns, with just two interceptions, and has run for 147 yards and three scores.

Stoudt has hit on 63.2 percent of his throws for 1,143 yards, with two touchdowns and four picks.
