The Detroit Tigers made one roster decision today, as the team picked up reliever Joakim Soria’s 2015 option, and he’s expected to be the team’s setup man next season.

The Detroit Tigers continued the trend of expected option pickups, and exercised a $7-million team option on reliever Joakim Soria for the 2015 MLB season:

Soria was inconsistent in the second half of the season for the Tigers after being lights-out in the first half with the

Texas Rangers

, pitching just 11 total innings with Detroit after the team acquired him at the trade deadline due to injuries. Soria finished with good overall numbers, only walking six batters all season (two were intentional walks) and he also only allowed two home runs in his 44.1 total innings (although both home runs were allowed while with Detroit).

Still, Soria has a pretty good track record from his days with the Kansas City Royals, and does have closing experience, something which could prove useful to the Tigers if incumbent closer Joe Nathan struggles again. Considering Detroit gave up young reliever Corey Knebel and promising relief prospect Jake Thompson to acquire Soria, this move isn’t unexpected, and there’s a solid chance Soria bounces back and proves to be a bargain. Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski has had trouble finding effective relievers, so sticking with Soria at a reasonable cost seemed to be a no-brainer, even if he does upgrade the bullpen further.

Soria figures to be the setup man with the way the Tigers roster sits now:
