The New York Rangers lost Saturday to the Winnipeg Jets 1-0 in a shootout, but they also lost captain Ryan McDonagh to a separated shoulder.

Injury was added to insult Saturday night at Madison Square Garden as the New York Rangers were held off the scoreboard in a 1-0 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

Captain Ryan McDonagh was injured when he absorbed a big hit against the boards from Winnipeg’s Evander Kane.

The 25-year-old defenseman sustained a separated shoulder on the play, according to the Rangers’ official Twitter account:

McDonagh was named captain before the beginning of the season and has averaged more ice time than any other Ranger skater, 25:26 going into Saturday’s game. In nine games, McDonagh had three assists and four minutes in penalties.

The shoulder is the same one that cost him two weeks of action last April, when there was no structural damage.

The Rangers also lost defenseman Kevin Klein to a foot contusion and played the first of five games without blueliner John Moore, who was suspended five games for an illegal hit to the head of Minnesota Wild center Erik Haula on Monday.

That Henrik Lundqvist was able to blank Winnipeg without three defensemen is fairly remarkable, but the Rangers limited the Jets to 25 shots on goal.

The shortage along the back line forced Dan Girardi to log 34:50 on Saturday, while fellow defensemen Marc Staal was on the ice for 29:33 and Matt Hunwick logged 27:58.
