Soldier Field in Chicago is going to be re-sodded for the third time this year so the field is ready for the Bears next home game on November 16th.

In a world where artificial turf and grass is the norm in football, few programs and franchises are clinging to the natural grass past. One of the most famous examples of this are the Chicago Bears, who have used natural grass their entire existence but consistently run into issues with their field.

Gone are the days were Mud Bowls are common and even excepted. If the game isn’t clean, the NFL and the players tend to get angry which is why Soldier Field is one of the worst playing surfaces in the NFL. It’s not for a lack of trying though, as the Bears continually re-sod the field throughout the season.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, this will be the case for the Bears November 16th game against the Minnesota Vikings. The re-sodding of the field will be the third time this season that it has happened.

"This will be the third re-sodding of Soldier Field’s playing surface since August. A entirely new field was installed prior to the Bears’ first preseason game. After two preseason games and the regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 7, the field was resodded down the middle before the Bears game against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 28."

It costs a quarter of a million dollars to re-sod the entire field, which means the Bears have spent $750,000 including this latest re-sodding to keep up their field. That’s dedication to the past but it’s something that may eventually lead to a change in surfaces at Soldier Field — at least, that’s something the players wouldn’t mind.
