There has been a lot of controversy around the Florida State Seminoles and although wide receiver Jesus “Bobo” Wilson was suspended for the Seminoles’ season-opening 37-31 victory over the
and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Jameis Winston, was suspended for their 23-17 overtime victory over the rival Clemson Tigers, it didn’t appear that any play was close to be kicking off the team.
Until now.
According to a report from Nole Digest, Florida State’s Scout.com and Fox Sportss affiliate, the Seminoles have dismissed linebacker Ukeme “Markuss” Eligwe from the team.
Eligwe was a valuable player for the Seminoles’ 2013 National Championship team and was going to be counted on to have a big season in 2014 until he suffered a Lisfranc injury during the offseason, Eligwe tried to return this season and things didn’t go well but he was reportedly close to getting back on the field once again. In fact, he returned to practice Monday but was not spotted by those who cover the team on Tuesday.
According to the report, the reason for his dismissal was for a “violation of team rules.”
Eligwe was arguably the Seminoles’ best special teams player in 2013 and saw time at both linebacker and defensive end, excelling as a pass rusher in certain situation last season.
Linebacker has been a point of weakness for the Seminoles’ this season, largely because of all of their injuries and the position just took another big hit. However, in Eligwe’s absence, other players, including true freshman Jacob Pugh, have stepped up. Pugh had two interceptions, including the game-clincher in the Seminoles 31-27 win over the 10th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish earlier this season.
The Seminoles will host the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday (6:30 pm ET, ESPN).
