NBA: 5 Early Darkhorse MVP Candidates
By Evan Massey
3. DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento Kings
One of the best young big men in the NBA is Sacramento Kings’ center DeMarcus Cousins, who has been a major surprise this season so far. He began his career as a bit of a hot head, and ended up getting suspended multiple times due to attitude problems. Those days are long gone, and he is focused on making his career the best success that it can be.
Cousins has averaged 24.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game in five games this season, and has led the Kings to a very surprising 4-1 record. The Kings were not necessarily expected to compete this season, but they do appear to have a chance with their current roster playing like it has been.
That being said, the Kings aren’t going to go any farther than Cousins can take them. He has a solid number two scoring option behind him in Rudy Gay, but Cousins is the number one guy for the Kings’ offense. It’s likely that he will continue to putting up big numbers, and he will have his name in the conversation for the MVP at the seasons end.
Next: 2. John Wall, Washington Wizards
