Final. 27. 42. 24. 15

The New Orleans Saints are a hard team to stop, and the San Francisco 49ers learned that the hard way in yet another loss this season.

All the San Francisco 49ers needed to do in order to win on Sunday afternoon was hold the New Orleans Saints on a fourth down play with under there emitters left in the game. That’s an easy task when talking about a normal team but the 49ers were dealing with Drew Brees and his shifty offensive prowess.

What turned into a fourth-down stop ended up being a huge first down play for the Saints which led to a Jimmy Graham touchdown with just under two minutes left to go in the game. This game after the 49ers led almost the entire game and the entire second half of a game they needed to win.

A last minute drive for the 49ers was stunted when a completed pass call was reviewed and overturned in favor of the Saints, but Colin Kapernick changed the Niners fortunes in one throw. On a fourth down play, somehow Kaepernick scrambled for a solid five seconds and threw a bomb to Michael Crabtree to put the 49ers deep inside of the Saints territory.

The drive would end in a field goal though, as the 49ers were a bit of a mess on their final drive of regulation. Perhaps the biggest mistake was leaving 0:44 seconds on the clock for Drew Brees — who had a timeout left. The game almost ended on a hail mary pass to Jimmy Graham, but the touchdown was nullified by a push-off all that may or may not have been sold by Parrish Cox.

In overtime, the Saints failed to get anything done on their first drive and handed the ball back over to a motivated 49ers offense that drove the field but wasn’t able to score before punting the ball away. Patience would pay off — with a bit of luck too — as a Drew Brees fumble gave San Francisco the ball deep in Saints territory.

All the 49ers needed to do was kick the field goal to win, and that’s exactly what they did. The win gives the 49ers some serious relief as they avoided falling to 4-5 on the season, which would have drastically lowered their chances to make the playoffs.

The Saints fell to 4-5 o the season but they also play in the laughably bad NFC South, which is still a division the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can theoretically win. The win for San Francisco might be one that motivates them to spark a run which is what this kind of win has the power to do.
