The Los Angeles Lakers finally got a bit of good news from the NBA in regards to injured rookie forward Julius Randle.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have been granted an exception by the NBA that will allow them to sign another player to replace injured rookie forward Julius Randle, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.

"The Los Angeles Lakers on Monday were granted a Disabled Player Exception by the NBA in the wake of the long-term leg injury suffered opening night by rookie forward Julius Randle, according to league sources.Sources told ESPN.com that the Lakers were granted the exception, valued at $1.5 million, after it was determined that Randle is “substantially” more likely than not to miss the remainder of his first pro season."

Stein gets more specific with the numbers, reporting that the exact value of the exception is $1,498,660, which is 50 percent of Randle’s rookie salary. The Lakers could also use the exception in a trade, which would bump up its value to $1,598,660 per league rules.

The Lakers have also been rumored to be shopping Steve Nash’s $9.7 million expiring deal. Nash has been ruled out for the season and is expected to retire.

The Lakers have plenty of options. They could sign a player via free agency–though they won’t get much for just $1.5 million–or could combine the exception with Nash’s expiring to make a move for a near-$10 million player. The Lakers may be able to get a core player from a team looking to unload a multi-year contract.

Off the top of my head, maybe a deal for Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders? Sanders is has four year left on a deal worth $11 million this season and could use a change of scenery.

That’s just me speculating, though.
