The Anaheim Ducks have some sort of viral infection going around; not good news at all

Last week, Anaheim Ducks fans got a taste of what might happen to their team if a couple major players went down at the same time. This week, they learned that it might be a legitimate concern.

When Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf got sent home from the Honda Center with flu-like symptoms, Getzlaf’s quick return seemed to be good news.

The Ducks posted two consecutive losses without Perry, though — and now, it seems as if he might be out for longer (along with who knows who else). The forward, who was named one of the league’s Three Stars for October, has been diagnosed with a viral gland infection.

Defenseman Francois Beauchemin is also out with the same thing. Beuchemin had to miss the team’s 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver Sunday night; now, both players are undergoing tests to figure out exactly what they’ve contracted.

In professional sports, an illness can be almost as deadly for a team as a serious injury to a star player — even more so if it’s infectious, which this very well could be.

There’s no telling how many players will contract something from one another simply from the contact sport they participate in- and if a player’s health isn’t at one hundred percent, putting him in the game can be dangerous.

Perry, who was placed on injured reserve this weekend, will be eligible to play in the Ducks’ Wednesday game, but the team has yet to confirm whether he will or not.

Assuming he’s infectious, it’s likely that the Ducks — who are currently at the top of the league — aren’t going to want to risk losing anyone else, and will quarantine Perry in a padded cell.
