Life presents second chances, a scenario that Josh Brent has been given with the Dallas Cowboys, as it was reported that the team will activate him to the 53-man roster nearly two years after he killed teammate Jerry Brown in an intoxicated driving accident.
Brent’s life has been in turmoil since the night of December 8, 2012, when he took his car to speeds as high as 134 mph on a 45 mph speed limit resulted in a crash that killed Brown, his best friend and teammate with both the University of Illinois and the Cowboys.
He was indicted on one charge of manslaughter and eventually served 180 days in jail along with a 10-year probation.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been one of Brent’s biggest supporters, showing his faith in Brent by giving him a contract extension through the 2015 season. Brown’s family has also been advocates in asking Jones to give him a second chance.
Brent will now receive the opportunity, as his road back will begin with him shedding off the weight and dormant life that six months in the clink can do to a 320-pound man.
The Cowboys are hoping he can achieve that goal soon, as the fact Brent is on the active roster is a clear sign the team needs him to be a part of their bid for the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2009.
