Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose says he’s thinking “long term” when sitting out games.

Except for 10 regular season games last year, Derrick Rose missed the previous two NBA seasons.

So naturally, fans were excited to see a finally healthy Rose play this season.

However, the 26-year-old has already missed four of the Chicago Bulls’ first eight games. This has led to some fans getting frustrated with the point guard and his lack of playing.

Rose had a message for those upset with him on Tuesday.

“I know a lot of people get mad when they see me sit out or whatever, but I think a lot of people don’t understand that when I sit out it’s not because of this year. I’m thinking about long term,” Rose said, via Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago.

“I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball.

“Having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to, I don’t want to be in my meetings all sore. Or be at my son’s graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past. (I’m) just learning and being smart.”

Rose’s comments are spot on here.

While many fans seem to believe basketball should be the only thing that matters to players, that’s simply not fair or realistic. Rose has a life after basketball to worry about and one shouldn’t fault him for giving that priority at the moment.

Rose is averaging 17.5 points, 5.8 assists and 2.8 blocks per game this season.
