The NHL is in a frenzy, trying to find extra blue liners as the season sets in

The Boston Bruins have Zdeno Chara coming back within the next month, and even they’re shopping for a defenseman.

Maybe the league’s offensive game is evolving faster than the defense can keep up, but no matter what the reason, it seems as if every team has expressed some sort of interest in picking up a new blue liner before Christmas.

There are whispers that the Arizona Coyotes are willing to shop Zbynek Michalek for a high scorer, but there aren’t many other guys who play his position that are even being mentioned as shopped around the NHL.

There’s always Buffalo‘s Tyler Meyers, but that rumor doesn’t seem to have much weight- and at his price tag, it’s unlikely a team can afford him.

With the rumors that the NHL Salary cap is staying put next season — and talk of expansion — this could be foreshadowing for the kind of defensive pain the league could be in for years to come.

It’s common in hockey for back-end players to take longer to develop than scorers, so it’s not like the solution is quick or easy.

As the 2014-2015 season progresses, though, fans should keep an eye on the trade wire- because if no options turn up, teams may begin to start trading players altogether.
