Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon wants Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler on the bench.
Jay Cutler through the years has adopted his role as most hated NFL player, even Chicago Bears fans have started to burn his jersey. Now, add Rich Gannon, former Minnesota Vikings and Oakland Raiders quarterback, to the list of people who want to see him benched.

“I don’t know what to make of Jay Cutler,” Rich Gannon said on “The Mully and Hanley Show” on WSCR-AM (670) Chicago. “It’s almost like he’s convinced that this isn’t going to work, and he’s just kind of going through the motions, to me, at times. I don’t see the fight. I don’t see the passion. I don’t see him in the huddle challenging guys.”
Rich Gannon has experience with Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman as was the Oakland Raiders’ quarterback when Trestman was the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2002-2003. Gannon was the NFL’s most valuable player in 2002, the year the Raiders won the AFC.
Gannon said that he thinks Trestman is too scared to bench Cutler because the team could react in a negative way.
I think he’s worried about losing the locker room,” Gannon said. “I think he feels he’s got a fragile football team right now, which is amazing. At some point, I always say, you have to hand the leadership of the football team back over to the players. I just don’t know that that’s happened.
Later on Monday, Gannon was on CBS Sports Network’s “NFL Monday QB” where he explained that Cutler needed to be benched.
“They lost the last four-out-of-five, and they’re coming off of a bye,” Gannon said according to the Chicago Tribune. “They came out last night and they were flat. Jay Cutler was awful. He turned it over three times – two interceptions and a fumble in the pocket. It bothered me that they weren’t ready to play… If I were Marc Trestman, I’d sit Jay Cutler.”
The Chicago Bears as a whole are having a pretty bad season as they sit at 3-6 after losing three straight and five of their last six games. Jay Cutler may be receiving a little too much blame. The Bears are 11th in passing offense in the NFL this season. Cutler had 18 touchdowns but has also thrown 10 interceptions and already has seven fumbles on the season. Other than the turnovers, Cutler and his 92.8 quarterback rating hasn’t been so bad this year. We’ll see what Trestman decides to do.
